The new Hula calendar interface preview

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

Nat has a posted a video of the new Calendar interface of Hula server, developed by Joe Gasiorek and it looks pretty slick, full of AJAX goodness. Check it out. If this is what we can expect for the mail interface we are in for a treat. Well done Joe, Nat, and the Hula team.

Simple Idea: Live CDs, OpenECDL and Screencasting

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

Take an Ubuntu LiveCD, package it with screencast tutorials of an OpenECDL course and give it out free in schools.

A useful, educational piece of software that anyone can use for free.

And instant karma for FLOSS.

A mini revolution.

Sunday, March 13th, 2005

Location. Location. Location – its a retailers mantra.

Getting prime shelf space in high street shops is a big deal for a manufacturer. And if we use this a measure of the success, Apple are really on a roll.

Its seems every phone shop and digital Photo shop in Dublin are stocking the Mac-Mini, the iPod (and many accessories and even the full iMac.
Those lovely white machines are pride of place in these stores, not sitting on a back shelve somewhere.

To put this in context; they are not stocking PCs, just the Macs.

So Vodafone are selling linux and non wintel machines to Joe Bloggs.

Now that is a mini-revolution.

What I don’t know : Suse 9.2

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

Here is a list of things I’m not/sure about with my Suse Linux Install, that I haven’t got answers for yet….

  • When I log out via the System Menu -> Log Out Username, the dialog prompts with a choice to shut down, Restart or Log out. If I choose Shut Down the machine doesn’t. It logs out to the login prompt. I can shut down from there.

  • Please answer in the comments if you can cross something off the list! Thanks

VNC & gnome session

Thursday, October 7th, 2004

I was setting up VNCserver on one of RedHat boxes, and was getting a gray screen with a cursor instead of gnome.

I checked the log and saw this line :

“gnome-session:you’re already running a session manager”

After searching the web, its seems I had an old entry in my Session manager var..

$ echo $SESSION_MANAGER
local/babbage:/tmp/.ICE-unix2345

I just deleted that and restarted VNCserver, and everything worked fine..

I really don’t know enough about windows managers….

Linux on the PowerBook

Friday, October 1st, 2004

I just installed YellowDog Linux on my new powerBook. I had partitioned the drive already so, it was very simple (apart from forgetting what video card I had!!) but it all seems to have just worked. YellowDog is RedHat based so if you’ve installed that before, you’ll be on familar ground.

If you have never used linux and you got a PowerPc check yellowdog out!!
